Web-Based Infrastructures: A 4-D Framework
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (15 August, 2002)
Authors: Sanmay Mukhopadhyay, Cooper Smith, and Mayra Muniz
Average review score:

Traditional Approaches Infused with Web Reality
Perhaps the major failure of the Internet Boom was its attempt to fit business models to technology. Had analysts fit the technology to the business model, we may have had a different experience.

A major theme of this book is that unless one keeps a clear eye on the four principle - business, people, process and technology - business drivers, it is difficult, if not impossible, to steer a course towards success.

There is no escaping the fact the Internet merely enables a more well-planned approach to securing a strategic position in a competitive market. It is not a one stop solution. The book demonstrates exactly how to integrate all four elements to deliver maximum value.

The authors conclude their book with a case study that illustrates the principles they espouse. In their appendix, they include interest assessment and change-management templates along with an interesting chapter on project management.

This book aligns the traditional mainframe approaches of reliability, availability and support with the realities of the web. It is worth every penny of its purchase price.

Finally! Updated processes aligned to modern environments
Having read (and reviewed) the eleven previous books in the Enterprise Computing series my expectations for this book were high - and completely met.

Like the other books in the series the structure and content covers people, process and technology, with an emphasis on business and stakeholder requirements. Unlike the other books, which are steeped in traditional approaches to reliability, availability and support processes that were born in the mainframe environment, this one gives those proven processes a facelift and aligns them to the realities of web time and pressures. Not that the parent processes were flawed - they were not agile enough to support the rapidly changing technical and business requirements that are constantly emerging. However, the best part of this book is that it never loses sight of business imperatives, which is something that needs to be reinforced in the minds of IT operations and management staff.

The book starts with a detailed discussion of business drivers, then covers the four essential dimensions of the web infrastructure framework. This is a blend of business- and technical-oriented actions, which includes understanding all factors and drivers, planning and phased implementation, value chain analysis and agile processes. In fact, the one aspect of the earlier books that I lamented - forcing old (but proven and necessary) processes, such as change control into web-based and e-business environments was not working. While the processes are essential, they needed streamlining, which is something many of us who specialize in service support and delivery have been grappling with. This book provides streamlined approaches that meet the requirements of contemporary environments, while maintaining the integrity of the processes themselves. This alone is reason enough to read this book.

The book ends with a case study that illustrates the key points made in the main body of the book, and also provides excellent material in the four appendices (including change control templates).

Wehrmacht Diary
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (20 March, 2000)

The Nine Lives Of A German Officer
I am a history buff and have always enjoyed World War II stories that are somewhat out of the mainstream. "WEHRMACHT DIARY," written by Wolfgang Cooper, ends up being one of those stories. The book follows the exploits of Major Siegfried Knappe, who fought for the German Army in virtually every major campaign during the conflict - was wounded numerous times - ended up in the Fuhrer bunker with Adolf Hitler near the end of the war where he served as a communications expert, shuttling back and forth between the front lines and the final German defenses - spent five years in various Soviet prison camps after the war - and finally made his way to East Germany, where he helped his family escape to the west. The amazing Major Knappe finally made his way to the United States. This is a very good book about a good soldier and a good family man. Similar to the movies "Das Boat" and "Cross Of Iron," I found myself pulling for Knappe and his comrades to get out of their perilous situations. Fascinating and easy to read. Not to technical. I loved it - and so did my father.

A Good German Soldier
I am a history buff, and "WEHRMACHT DIARY" is without question one of the best books in recent years that I have read dealing with World War II. It's not often you get a chance to look at the war through the eyes of a German soldier, but "WEHRMACHT DIARY" gives the reader that opportunity. Similar to the films "Cross Of Iron" and "Das Boat," you almost - but not quite - start rooting for the Germans near the end of the book. The author, Wolfgang Cooper, has done a superb job of chronicling the life of Major Siegfried Knappe, who fought on every major battle front save for the North Afrikan campaign, met Hitler face to face three times, and was in the bunker near the end of the war when the Russians were storming the gates of Berlin. Knappe's detailed accounts of the five years he spent in Russian captivity are also fascinating. The fact that this man survived numerous injuries and personal set-backs, and survived to eventually bring his family to the United States, is truly a remarkable story. I also enjoyed the section near the end of the book where Cooper gives a reasoned and intelligent view on the difference between Nazis and party ideology and regular German soldiers who were ordinary men fighting for their country. Unlike many history books that lose the reader after the first chapter, "WEHRMACHT DIARY" is written in a straightforward, easy to understand style. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about World War II and world history.

Keeping Cool in a Political Inferno
Elizabeth Holtzman's book is a testimony to the irony and intense nature of life in public office. From her initiation as a member of Congress on the Watergate investigating committee to the cauldron of New York City politics, she weaves a fascinating and well documented story of triumphs, mistakes and human drama. An excellent book for the reader interested in the American political system.

Woodstove cookery : at home on the range

Burn Like A Pro
When I first bought a house in the Blue Ridge Mountains I found that (being built in 1810) the most efficient and economical way to heat it was with wood. So although I didn't buy this book for the cooking aspects (which proved nice anyway), it was INDISPENSABLE for a beginning wood-burner. You get the low down on maintenance, safety, and a host of other must-have information. Should be required reading with every wood burning stove/heater purchase. Two thumbs up.

A complete guide!
We are building a house and I am considering using a wood cook stove outside on the patio, to be used during the summer months, when the inside electric stove would heat up the house, so I bought this book as an introduction to using one.

This book covers a lot of ground, including new and used stoves, various types of wood for fuel, coal stoves, how to operate the stove, recipes, and a whole host of other topics. Now I can't wait to buy a stove and get 'cookin'.

This book has a lot of neat stuff from 1973 to 1998
Ithink this book is pretty neat and I got it for Christmas and I started reading it right away. In the wedding album though, you forgot to mention Victor and Ashley's marriage and Jack and Nikki's marriage. Why was that?

The absolute authority on the history of Y & R.
An avid fan since the beginning, I have truly enjoyed going down memory lane and filling in the blanks of storylines long forgotten. This book covers every detail and depth of the characters and their development. Truly a must-have for anyone who has grown to love the people of Genoa City.

Your Thyroid
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (July, 1992)
Authors: Cooper, E. Chester Ridgway, and Lawrence C. Wood
Average review score:

Best reference on thyroid health and treatment.
YOUR THYROID is the single most comprehensive and accessible reference on thyroid problems I have seen. It includes summaries of recent studies that other books lack, it treats the cluster of thyroid problems in a unified way, and raises issues of treatment with the same level of integration. Of particular help to women seeking in-depth information on thyroid issues.

The best thyroid book I've found so far!
Not only did this book help me understand my thyroid and what it does, it helped my primary care giver diagnos my disorder. The book lists all the tests that should be done and what the normal levels should be and it has a great resource listing. It also tells how to trace thyroid problems in families. I finally have a handy resource book at home when I need it!

350 Years of New Castle, Delaware: Chapters in a Town's History
Published in Hardcover by Cedar Tree Books (January, 2002)
Author: Constance Cooper
Average review score:

350 Years of New Castle, Delaware
Anyone who has visited this quaint and delightful town will love Connie Cooper's collection of essays about historic New Castle. Dr. Cooper is the Manuscript Librarian of the Historical Society of Delaware and her thoughtful manner is reflected in her choices of articles for this volume. I was particularly pleased to discover an essay about the Dutch in New Castle by C.A. Weslager; a 1795 description of the town by the Duke de la Rochefoucault; and Deborah Van Riper Harper's essay "The Gospel of New Castle: Historic Preservation in a Delaware Town,"which focuses on the work of Daniel Bates and mentions Louise Crowninshield. The book is fun to read, a refreshing piece of scholarship, and beautifully printed by Cedar Tree Press. It is a real collector's item that will give pleasure to readers for many generations to come.

Finally a breakthrough into chapter reading!!
I've tried, unsucessfully, a number of times to introduce my son to chapter books. He is only four, but will be turning five soon. I wanted him to experience the imaginative process of developing an image in his mind from what he hears. This is the first book that has held his interest. He can't read it himself but I can see his face change expression as he listens - I know his mind is at work. We always only read one chapter at a time, drawing the story out. He always can recall the story up to the starting point and is anxious to hear another chapter. I feel like the "magic" of books has been taken to a new level for our little reader - what an amazing thing to see.

Accept your Troll and be Amazed!
I am a therapist in MA who specializes in women's issues, codependency, dissociative disorder, PTSD, all of which involve self-esteem problems. Dr. Cooper's book uses a gentle, humorous, nonjudgemental approach to help people understand their thoughts and reactions and offers solutions to make things better. I've been buying this book in quantities to make it readily available to my patients who are taking in its message and feeling better quicker! This book complements DBT group work and other cognitive behavioral approaches. Please don't ever let it go out of print!
